Ending Female Genital Mutilation
“On this International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation, let us renew our promise to protect the rights of women and girls everywhere, and ensure that they can live free from violence and fear. Together, we can end this injustice once and for all."
- UN Secretary-General António Guterres
Female genital mutilation (FGM) is a human rights violation that infringes on the fundamental rights of girls and women.
FGM relates to all procedures that involve partial or total removal of the external female genitalia or other injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons. This practice can have short-term to lifelong health impacts on physical, sexual, and mental health, spanning from childhood, reproductive years, and into old age.
About 120 to 140 million women have been subject to Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and 3 million girls are at risk each year, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
