UNHCR FIRST FILM FESTIVAL
June 22, 2023
On June 22, 2023, the UPFI Film Center at the University of the Philippines Diliman, Quezon City hosted the country’s first Refugee Film Festival, organized by the UNHCR in celebration of World Refugee Day. The event aimed to honor the resilience and courage of millions who have been forced to flee war, persecution, and violence. The festival featured six films that raised awareness, built empathy, and mobilized action for refugees.
Additionally, the rightsholders showcased their culinary skills and cultural heritage by preparing a delightful array of traditional foods, including maamul sambosa and various types of grilled dishes, each representing their respective hometowns and regions. These mouthwatering dishes enhanced the event’s appeal and provided attendees with a taste of the rich, diverse cultures that the rightsholders brought with them.
The inclusion of traditional foods contributed to the overall success of the festival, highlighting the rightsholders’ talent and dedication while fostering a sense of community and appreciation for the cultural diversity that refugees bring to the Philippines. The UNHCR First Film Festival thus became a memorable occasion where attendees could not only learn about the struggles and contributions of refugees through cinema but also experience their culinary heritage, thanks to the active participation of the rightsholders and the support of PACCI. This collaboration generated mutual benefits, promoting a sense of belonging and recognition for the unique contributions of refugees.
